| Interview with Northland Interviewer: Hashim Almadani
JorZine Editor "Hashim Almadani" has conducted the following Interview With Northland, the folk death metal band from Barcelona,Spain . JZ: Can you tell us a little bit about the band and it's history ? Northland: Well, Northland's history goes back to 2004, when Pau Murillo ( the guitar player and singer of the band) started a band with some friends. After a while the first line-up broke up and Pau joined a band in which he started composing songs (music & lyrics). Right after recording a self-produced demo the band broke up but Pau and some of the members of the band started Northland's project. That is, the idea of the band was old, but it wasn't until 2007 that it took shape. JZ: Being a folk metal band from southern Europe, what do you think about folk metal and Viking metal scene in south of europe ? And what do you think about the levels of success some Folk Metal bands reached such as Amon Amarth, Turisas, and Ensiferum Northland: To tell the truth there are many good Folk/pagan/celtic/viking metal bands in southern Europe, all of them with their own personality and really good ideas. The first band that comes to my mind is HORDAK, a great band from Madrid, with which we are going to share stage in September. I recommend their second album "The last european wolves", no doubt it's an splendid job! I would also like to mention Karlahan, who are good friends from us and also come from Barcelona, Wolfencross, Endorthyn, Omendark, Numen... There's actually a lot of activity in here at the moment! hahaha And for the success of the nothern bands, I find it fantastic, because we probably wouldn't exist as a band if it wasn't for them! I personally love either well-known bands such as Amon Amarth, Turisas and Ensiferum and less well-known bands like Suidakra, Arkona, Moonsorrow and Svartsot and I think they all have an undeniable quality! Every day new projects (bands, albums, etc.), which deserve being heard come out. For example, I was amazed at the Norwegians Glittertind. I had never heard about them, I found a song by them in Myspace by chance and I fell in love with their music at once! JZ: Your first demo album, released in 2007 was a great success in some countries, did you expect such success and what are your thoughts about this? Northland: Well, you would never expect a "garage band" to be heard worlwide. New technologies and Internet in particular play an important role there. We can reach a lot of people with the tools we have at present. Sometimes I read e-mails from fans from Austria, UK, Ireland, South America, France, North America, even from Asia! and this is something that cheers us up and encourages us to keep on working hard at whatever we are doing!!! JZ: tell us about the competition that you won in Badalona city festival ? Northland: The aim of the competition is to promote underground bands from our land, Catalonia. Every band could take part in the competition. The organizers chose some of the bands among all the bands who wanted to participate. Then the chosen bands from Badalona (6) played in a little club in Badalona and the 3 best bands went to the final. At this final concert we had a great stage, great sound equipment and it took place during the city's festivities and around 8 bands, very good bands I have to say, played there. Bur the panel of judges decided we were the best band. At first we couldn't believe it, because the level of the competition was quite high. JZ: A while back you played a festival in Austria, how was it playing outside of Spain for the first time? And how was the reaction of the crowd? Northland: It was an incredible experience! We could have never even hoped it! It's something you don't expect, you know, you get an e-mail asking if you are interested in playing at an Austrian festival...words fail me! Moreover, we met some of the masters of this genre, I must say I'm fan of those bands, among them Mannegarm, Finterforst, Nargaroth, Aeveron, Thrudvangar...We also made good friends there, in the end it's the most important thing! The response of the people was really good, even taking into account that we played early in the afternoon, which is not the best hour to play. JZ: Any upcoming events or albums? Northland: Right now we're working in the pre-production of our first LP, we want to offer something new to our fans. And related to concerts, we're going to have important events soon, especially in September, because we are going to play out of Spain again, this time in the UK at a festival called Pure Metal Fest, in which we will share stage with EVERGREY, KALMAH, PRIMORDIAL, PRIMAL FEAR, HOLY MOSES and many more! JZ: What do you think about the heavy metal scene in the Middle East? Any thoughts? Northland: I must admit I'm not very well up in the Middle East scene, but I know on good authority that there are many good musicians waiting for the springboard to fame. I have a very good friend that told me about bands from your land and I must say I loved the bands I listened to! I have listened something of Nervecell, Oath to Vanquish...really good extreme metal!!! I also saw Orphaned Land at Wacken and I loved them too. But the thing that strikes me the most is the commitment of the heavy metal fans! It's incredible! I saw a video on the Internet in which a few guys are watching a death metal concert in Baghdad inside an empty pool and the go totally crazy!! ;D JZ: Lately we've been having a lot of heavy metal festivals in the Middle East with a lot of huge names, ever considered playing the Middle East? And is there a certain country you would like to play? Northland: It would be a great pleasure to go to Middle East with our music and to learn about your culture and people, it would be a great experience for us and for Spanish metal in general! We would love to go there, of course! JZ: Thank you for your time brothers, best of luck in your coming festival in UK and your life and music. Any last words for your fans at JorZine? Northland: Thank YOU for your interest in our band. It was a pleasure to answer to your questions! Best wishes to all lovers of good music and freedom of Middle East! We hope to see you soon! ;D. |
