Last night I spent a couple of hours contemplating … Why do I even bother? Why do I still go to heavy metal concerts in Amman knowing that I should be preparing myself for a major disappointment each and every time? And the truth is, it’s because I miss it!! I miss that thrill of insanely loud heavy metal blasting through the speakers in a small hall with 500 or so brothers of metal, I miss waking up the next day musically hung over with a wrecked neck, sore throat, drone in my ears, and a guitar riff that I can’t get our of my head.
Unfortunate enough, I got to the venue only 10 minutes late at exactly 7:10, only to find the sound suppliers unloading the monitors and cables from their truck!!! An hour and a half late, everything was set up and needless to say, almost none of the bands had time to do a proper sound check –not that it would’ve helped them much anyways-. This was the major managerial mistake, aside from that the show took place in an appropriate venue and was well managed, promoted, structured, and hosted accordingly, problems were dealt with swiftly and efficiently, and that alone –in my opinion- redeemed them being late. Sound wasn’t as bad as I expected it to be, keeping in mind the time they took to set up and sound check, it was acceptable and better than a lot of past gigs that took place in Amman in the past 3 years. I’d say management wise, they are moving along a fine path, and I’d give them a 7/10
Now lets get to the main part of the show, the music, and the lack of it. Honestly, I didn’t bother asking for the names of the bands so I’m just going to call them by their most disappointing covered track. First came “Careless whisper” butchering some Rock/Metal classics that I can’t even remember, all I do remember is that it appeared as if each of them was playing in his own little universe, frankly, I can’t think of a single positive aspect to this band –except maybe making me laugh at the 20 deaf people who were in the front headbanging oh so passionately- so I’ll just move on in spite of my strong desire to keep on bashing them for 2 more paragraphs. 2/10
Then came the second band “Bloodline” who covered Slayer, Metallica, and played an original track that I think I would’ve liked if I listened to appropriately. Musically, their choices of covers didn’t show what they’re capable of, however, I believe they had some sort of a winning formula in there with Anas on guitars, Fo’ad on bass, and a dude I didn’t catch his name at the drums. Sadly, vocals ruined the whole thing for me, as it lacked the needed power and aggression for such a musical genre, however, I admired the fact that the 14 year old was giving it her best and didn’t show any signs of stage fright, that alone was impressive, and I think she might find her own voice in a different genre of music, one that is a bit lighter than heavy metal. 5/10
Third guest band came on stage afterwards, I believe they were called “Noises” and surprisingly enough they were playing Punk Rock in a heavy metal show which I found was a bit weird, their choice of tracks was interesting and their performance was somewhat solid with a few mistakes here and there. They seemed confident on stage, however, out of place, maybe in a different concert with some punk fans around they would put on a better show. 5.5/10
Forth band came on stage, sound checked and jammed a bit around a few traditional oriental tunes then began their show with Iron Maiden and Pantera covers, covers that are, to an extent challenging, compared to other tracks played by other bands, specially vocally, I mean when was the last time anyone had the guts to properly cover Bruce Dickinson. Overall, they have what it takes; all they need is more practice and better song choices. 7/10
Overall, this whole thing had it’s ups and downs, hopefully in the future if they decided to carry on with this project, mistakes will be avoided, and perhaps better talents will show up.
