First of all, I need to mention few facts, Although it seems that he can't get over his Metallica issues, this album isn't Mustaine's response to Death Magnetic. Although their last album was released two years ago and it was a mediocre effort with nothing much to promise, this album was maybe the most anticipated metal album of 2009.
Sometimes when we hear Megadeth, we instantly think of Mustaine, but this band isn't a great musician’s solo career, not even a revenge act on Metallica. Megadth is a great band that gave us one of the best albums in the history of heavy metal -Rust in Peace-. A lot of great musicians have been with the band, -Marty Freidman, David Ellefson and Chris Poland-. When you're desperate for quality metal, you can always count on Megadeth to feed your hunger. "Endgame" isn't just a Megadeth album… it's A MEGADETH ALBUM!!!
All of that been left off my chest, we can now go through the review. I will start with the single release "Head Crusher" which from the beginning you get the feeling that the BAND is facing a death penalty, and their lives depend on their guitar playing. Well… they earned their pardon. Their aim is to overwhelm the jury… do I smell "Killing Is My Business"? Their intentions are clear… they didn't impress you lately?!! Ok, double or nothing! And they won the bet. It's not their best album, but still, this is pure Megadeth, pure thrash and… well… nothing tops Rust in Peace… period.
So far, so good… so what? Well, the 'deth attack continues and there's no backing down … Bad Omen!!! Hell yeah!!! They say thrash is better for angry youth but damn, Dave is as angry as ever. He still has his government paranoia, anarchistic visions, unfinished personal relationships and adrenaline fueled need for speed. Those themes are cleverly depicted in the lyrics and integrated in the music through a winning formula that only Megadeth can deliver. Even though the music is of top quality, my favorite part is the excellent songwriting, lines like “This neverending nightmare… Of the dreams I'll never, ever get to see” in "Bite the Hand That Feeds" is going down on my precious little quote notebook!!!
Chris Broderick's contribution to the lead section is worth something. His guitar playing abilities helped the album reaching a high quality level. His guitar dueling with Mustaine in the end of"1,320" is one of the most memorable moments in the album. LeMenzo and Drover are also doing a great job on their instruments, helping to achieve the musical unity of the record.
Overall, this album proved something that I have always suspected. They won't get a new crowd from it. Anybody who likes the band (doesn't matter which era he likes the most) will fall for this album. But if you don't like them already, then don't bother your precious ears listening to this album. Just give Rust in Peace or Peace Sells another listen. If you still don't like Megadeth… then, well… do me a favor and Wake Up Dead tomorrow!!!
